title: reflection of TTT training on 2024-09-21-22 description: I attended the TTT training organized by D85 TTT team as a trainee from 2024-09-21 to 2024-09-22.

It is always good to have chance to take part in new training. TTT is one of them I want. TTT means Train The Trainer. Its objective is to help experienced Toastmasters become trainers.

In the two-day session, we have 3 excellent trainers: Hubert, Akeel and Maya. Hubert is the main trainer, and Akeel and Maya give a lot of insightful and supportive feedback. I really enjoy the training and strongly recommend each Toastmaster to join if there is chance.

The following is my major take-away.

day-1

Hubert systematically elaborated the basis of how to be a trainer instead of a lecture/speaker. The core change here is that the trainer will lead the trainee to discover their own solution, while lectures will show the audience what he/she has for them. So trainers let the trainees talk a lot, think a lot, find out a lot.

Of course, Hubert not only encourages us to talk, he as the trainers also helps us discover the methods:

  1. design a workshop with objectives

  2. use activities to move the people

  3. Debrief after the activity

  4. Facilitate group discussion

  5. Ask really good questions

For the activities, we have learned

  1. Reverse brainstorm

  2. Role play

  3. Case study

  4. Story-telling

  5. Bad examples vs. good examples

For the questions, I have learned

  1. Which one is the most important quality?

  2. Which one do you already have?

  3. Which one do you need to improve the most?

  4. How can you improve the quality?

There are many details and tips cross the day-1 training. I think If I can use the above effectively, I could be very confident to design a training for a group of people.

Day-2

In day 2, each group has one volunteer to make a demo training session for 30 minutes. The Trainers will give feedback and the other members will also comment. I volunteered for our group. We have

During the case show, many members practiced

  1. Ice-breaking - raise the pain-point/curiosity of the trainees

  2. facilitate activities - grouping, rules, debrief

  3. ask questions

  4. Q&A

  5. summarize

From the practice, I realized that the methods and tools are very good if I am going to do training for title as

  1. How to …

  2. Improve your …

  3. Skills for …

These will help people gain skills for a specific target. While they may not be very suitable for informative and inspiring topics, such as

  1. What is …

  2. Why you should …

My topic - Free Software for you and for me - was able to raise a lot of questions from the audience. However, it did not achieve my objective - help people use free software - effectively. I ponder that I could next time try something like

  1. How to get more control of the applications you use daily

  2. How to have more trust in the programs you use

I am still very glad that I have a chance to do something I want, especially on the Software Freedom Day: 2024-09-22.

The TTT training are very effective and interesting for me. The trainees are respectful and experience. I appreciate all teamwork for this training and will implement the skills and knowledge in my coming activities.
