title: How to practice English in Toastmasters description: On 2024-10-27 I plan to do this sharing in Climber Toastmasters club. —
Dear Fellow members, Distinguished guests,
Good afternoon.
Please raise your hands if you come to Toastmasters to learn English.
Please raise your hands if you know that you can practice English in Climber Toastmasters club.
Welcome all of you.
If you want an answer for how, you need to find the answer for why. So before I tell you how to practice your English in Toastmasters, let’s find out why you would like to improve your English.
Ask a few people.
I know a club member in Yu-Life. He is older than me. He told me he wanted to improve his English because he likes to do business globally. He is our member for almost a year, and he has delivered several speeches in English. Most importantly, now he can communicate with his customers in English, and his international business is working.
I can tell you an imaginary story. The mouse mama lives with her baby mouses happily. However, the cat wants to catch them. One nice afternoon like today, when the mouses are having a snap, the cat approaches them. In the critical moment, the mouses mama shouts loudly: “wang, wang”. The cat thinks there is a dog, so it runs away. The mouse family are safe, and the mouse mum tells her babies, “You know why it is important to learn a foreign language.”
As our beautiful meeting poster says, English is an international language, and it is in fact the only international language today, so it is important for you to learn English. Whether you are doing research, or you are doing business, or even you are traveling, English can help you communicate with people all around the world.
You may say, I would like to stay home. Even if you are staying home, learning English is beneficial because it will give your a fun life, because the most advanced technology, the most beautiful songs, the most fascinating books, and the most imaginary movies are all in English. Don’t you want to enjoy them?
To learn a language well, we need practice: listening, speaking, reading and writing.
Which ones are more difficult for you?
I think speaking and listening are hard. Most of us do not have much chance to speak and listen to English in our daily life. We may listen to radio or watch English TV, but not very much.
If you want to practice speaking and listening, you must find some partners and environment. Toastmasters clubs like Climber provide such environment, and more importantly you are safe here. You don’t need to worry about mistakes, and you get positive and supportive feedback immediately.
I will do an example: name, from, work, toastmasters experience, help people in toastmasters.
Ask people to do this practice.
Toastmasters clubs provide speaking and listening opportunities.
For speaking, are you worried about pronunciation? First, we need to make a difference between accent and oral English. There is no need to worry about your accent because as far as people can understand you, you are good. We need to pay attention to the pronunciation of the words, but now it is easy, you can listen to your phone, and ask people in Toastmasters.
In Toastmasters club, you can take part in the Table Topics to practice your speaking as guests. You can do prepared speeches as club members. Either way, you will get useful feedback from our evaluators, timers, ah-counter and grammarian.
Do you know the meeting role of Ah-Counter?
Who is today’s Grammarian?
They will help your improve your spoken English. All you need is boldness, courage.
In Toastmasters club, you can practice your listening by taking meeting roles, like evaluators, Ah-Counter and Grammarian. To make the best of these roles, you need listen carefully. Maybe you don’t understand all, but you can take note of what you have heard and give your report only for that.
Reading and writing are up to you. If you are a member, you have paid your membership due. You will have your pathways. To work though the Pathways, you need read and write.
How would you improve? Practice will help, feedback will help, but most importantly, you set your goals, you need to have persistence to work towards your goals. I think becoming a club member helps a lot here.
The reasons are
When you have paid your membership due, you have set your goal. We don’t want to waste our money, so we will push ourselves to do something in the club.
When you are a member, you have fellow members. Your fellow members will show your their improvement vividly, and you will learn from that.
When you are a member, you are in a global community. Every time you make some progress, you will be recognized by the community.
When you are a member, you have the chance to take part in the speech contest each year. The stage is big, and your speech can be heard by the world.
There is no short-cut for learning English, and there is no short-cut for learning anything. However, Toastmasters clubs provides your the stage to practice English in listening, speaking, reading and writing. They also encourage you to continuously improve your English, but not only English. If you know why you are learning, you will become a better English speaker and a more confident people.
